Clinical and research papers and case reports in this issue should be a useful resource in support of the philosophy of continuous improvement and the objective of improving pig health.

Gianpietro Sandri’s paper on the eradication of Porcine Reproduction and Respiratory Syndrome is topical given the increasing concerns that new strains of the virus might emerge in Europe, with the serious consequences for pig health reported in the outbreaks in Asia in 2007.

It is critical that biosecurity vigilance remains high to prevent the entry of another serious pig disease threat following a decade in which there has been little respite from the ravages of Porcine Circovirus Diseases. Two papers in this issue describe the impact of vaccines for PCV2 and offer hope for the future. A paper on the within herd dynamics of PCV2 infection from Mathieu Andraud and colleagues adds further to the knowledge base on this important disease.

Planning for the future, good management and attention to detail are keys to success at every stage in the pig production process. Jamie Robertson outlines the application of technology to herd health planning and Glen Cassar and colleagues describe an approach to investigating poor reproductive performance in sows that allowed the key management factors to be identified and addressed.

However, there is no getting away from the fact that it is often individuals who can make the biggest difference. Nick Bird and Hugh Crabtree highlight the importance of the operator in determining energy use and waste on UK pig units.

The value of sharing ideas for improving pig health should never be underestimated and the Pig Journal continues to encourage practical case reports. The Clinical Club at PVS meetings is always a highlight, and it is encouraging to see the diversity of cases reported by Susanna Williamson, Per Wallgren, Jesus Borobia and their colleagues in this issue.

The Pig Journal was approved as the official journal of the European College of Porcine Health Management (ECPHM) at their annual general meeting in Durban in June 2008. The ECPHM board has indicated that it is their intention to encourage Diploma candidates to publish their work in the Pig Journal. PVS welcomes the support of ECPHM and looks forward to a symbiotic collaboration that plays its part in continuous improvement.
